Reflection on the UCLA Williams Institute study
Coming out at work is often seen as a positive step towards authenticity, but it’s also fraught with risk. Research shows that LGBTQ+ employees who are out at work experience discrimination at much higher rates than those who aren’t. Visibility, while empowering, often heightens vulnerability—particularly in unsupportive environments.
Organisations must recognise that encouraging visibility isn’t enough. Supportive frameworks, comprehensive training, and clear anti-discrimination policies are essential to create safe spaces for those who choose to be out. For those still uncertain, allyship from colleagues and leadership can make a profound difference. A culture that genuinely respects each person’s choice about being out—or not—ensures everyone feels safe, valued, and respected, regardless of where they are on their journey.
