Intersectionality at Work: Addressing the Unique Discrimination Faced by LGBTQ+ People of Colour

Reflection on the UCLA Williams Institute study

Workplace inclusivity requires more than blanket statements. For LGBTQ+ people of colour, the experiences of discrimination and harassment are often compounded by intersecting biases, creating a double burden. Recent research shows that LGBTQ+ employees of colour report higher rates of discrimination and harassment than their white counterparts—clear evidence that intersectionality matters in every workplace.

By acknowledging these unique challenges, organisations can implement targeted support and truly meet employees where they are. This involves not only addressing visible issues but also building nuanced policies that reflect the full spectrum of employee experiences. A workplace that recognises and supports intersectionality sends a powerful message: that every individual’s identity is seen, respected, and valued. Only through such a lens can we genuinely foster belonging for all.
